World Fantasy Awards 2025

    Gestern wurden die Finalisten der diesjährigen World Fantasy Awards bekanntgegeben. Die Gewinner sollen auf der 2025 World Fantasy Convention verkündet werden, die vom 30. Oktober bis zum 02. November 2025 im englischen Brighton stattfinden wird.

    Tainted Cup von Rober Jacksop Bennet war, nachdem ich Founders Trilogie wirklich gut fand, für mich leider gar nichts. Da bin ich relativ früh im Buch an der Sherlock Holmes Artigen weiblichen Hauptfigur abgeprallt, die ging mir einfach nur auf die Nerven. Ich finde es aber auch sonst sehr erstaunlich, dass dieses Buch für den World Fantasy Award nominiert wurde, da werden ja sonst eher Bücher aus der "Literary Fiction" Ecke ausgewählt...

    "Tell me, Tool, what dominates your thoughts?"
    "I think of futility, Adjunct."
    "Do all Imass think about futility?"
    "No. Few think at all."
    "Why is that?"
    "Because Adjunct, it is futile.”

    Lustig - bei mir ist es genau andersrum. Von der Founders Trilogy - bzw. deren Auftakt - war ich enttäuscht, weil RJB mMn plötzlich auch dem Jugendwahn gefrönt hat und ich mit der Heldin des Romans nicht allzu viel anfangen konnte. The Tainted Cup hingegen finde ich großartig. Das Ermittlerduo (das im Prinzip "Nero Wolfe & Archie Goodwin in Fantasyland" ist), die sehr originelle, ihre Geheimnisse nur langsam preisgebende Welt - für mich passt das alles wunderbar.


    Aber ich weiß, wie es ist, wenn man an einer der Hauptfiguren abprallt, dann kommt keine Freude auf.


    Was den World Fantasy Award und die Literary Fiction angeht, sehe ich das anders. Den letztjährigen Gewinner, The Reformatory von Tananarive Due, würde ich nach allem, was ich weiß, tatsächlich als Literary Fiction einordnen (hab' den Roman noch nicht gelesen und habe es momentan auch nicht vor), aber den fünf Gewinnern davor würde ich dieses Etikett nicht aufkleben. (Vielleicht, sehr vielleicht Alaya Dawn Johnsons Trouble the Saints; da ich den Roman ebenfalls nicht gelesen habe, würde ich dem noch den "benefit of the doubt" geben, aber bei den anderen ... nee, Literary Fiction ist das in meinen Augen nicht.)

    Dass es so lange gedauert hat, die Gewinner zu posten, hat mit meiner/unserer derzeit etwas stressigen Lebenssituation zu tun; deshalb bin ich hier gerade auch ganz generell wenig präsent.

    The Tainted Cup ist der heiße Scheiß, lapis. Das war für mich definitiv eines der besten Bücher des letzten Jahres/der letzten Jahre. Es freut mich, dass es tatsächlich noch einigermaßen "zeitnah" auf Deutsch erscheint (und man sich über die Qualität der Übersetzung in diesem Fall imho keine Sorgen machen muss).
